Palimpsest

When I woke up yesterday, before my brain had even fully come online, the word ‘palimpsest’ was rolling through it.

This was my spirit team up bright and early, sending messages before I’d consumed any caffeine.

I wasn’t sure I remembered the meaning of it, so after I had a few sips of coffee, I looked it up.

Palimpsest:

1.       writing material (such as a parchment or tablet) used one or more times after earlier writing has been erased.

2.       something having usually diverse layers or aspects apparent beneath the surface.

And it made me think of people, of growth, of how many different layers of ourselves we carry around with us. How past versions of ourselves are still apparent, even when we think we’ve successfully erased and written over them. How even though we move on from things, heal from them, and even sometimes start over, the past is never really gone.

Even if it’s faint, barely there, it’s still a part of each individual, beautiful story.

Each and every one of us is a walking palimpsest. An in-progress story. A never-ending and complex work of art.🖌️🎨
