Isn’t tarot witchcraft?

Someone asked me today, “Isn’t tarot witchcraft?”

And I’m so glad they did.

The answer depends on your definition of witchcraft. I’m going to share mine. For me, witchcraft is focusing your intention on a specific outcome.

In my opinion, anything can be witchcraft. The way you stir your coffee. The words you say to yourself and others, your intentions, are all spells. After all, we ‘spell’ words, don’t we? And what is witchcraft if it isn’t imbuing your words or some other tool with intention?

We all go through life with intentions. Hopefully, they are good and lead to positive things for us and for other people. In my opinion, we all practice ‘witchcraft’ all the time, we just don’t call it as such because it doesn’t look like what we see in the movies.

When you look at yourself in the mirror and remind yourself how wonderful you are and that you ARE going to have an amazing day—that’s witchcraft.

When you create something with love and intention—whether it’s a delicious meal, a sketch of your best friend’s face, or simply wish someone well—that’s your intention at work and that’s witchcraft.

I don’t want to turn this into a rant on how witchcraft often gets a bad rap—but witches come in all flavors and textures. ‘Witchcraft’ isn’t inherently good or bad—it’s the intention of the practitioner that matters. I’m sure there are some witches out there that might do the things we see witches in horror movies do, but I’d hazard a safe guess that isn’t the majority of those who call themselves a ‘witch.’

As for tarot itself, it’s simply a tool that can be used for self-reflection and growth. Tarot cards comprise universal archetypes that can help us look deep within ourselves—at what we need to focus on, heal, release, or do more of, to be better humans.

Do witches use tarot? Maybe some do, maybe others do not. You don’t have to use tarot cards to be a witch and using tarot cards doesn’t make you a witch. The two things are not one and the same.

It’s my personal belief that we (all of us) are divinely guided and protected – and using a tarot deck isn’t going to call in anything negative in nature unless that is what you already are calling in to your life through your words, actions, and by carrying around unhealed trauma that attracts negative entities to you.

Is it a good idea to call in divine protection if you ever feel you need it – YES! One can never ‘over ask’ for such a thing. Should you be clear about your intentions when querying the other side? YES! If you ask for information only for the highest good of yourself and others – spirit hears you and will provide what you ask. You have numerous beings on the other side watching over you and guiding you and they know your intentions – but it doesn’t hurt to speak them into being.

Let’s bring tarot out of the dark and into the light—where it belongs. Let’s use it as a tool for self-discovery and growth. Let’s use it as a tool for those we love on the other side, and who love us, to communicate messages for our highest good. Where we need to dig a little deeper within ourselves to uncover something we’ve avoided or haven’t noticed. To remind us that we are loved and worth loving. To give us hope when sometimes things feel dark. Those are the messages tarot is designed to deliver—when we are ready to hear them and use it as a tool for our highest good.

Love and light, ✨

Katrina
